Taking A Break

Having an extra day off on July 4th was wonderful. I like my job, but that break is always nice. Naturally I had a long list of things I’d put off and wanted to get done until it occurred to me, this was no way to enjoy a vacation!

So here’s a list of things to remember on vacation, even when it’s just a day at home:

Turn off the electronics! While it’s tempting to catch up on your blogging, email, etc., social media is rapidly catching up to television in terms of hours spent – http://www.emarketer.com/Article/Digital-Set-Surpass-TV-Time-Spent-with-US-Media/1010096

Catch up with friends. The need for social interaction is hardwired into our physical beings – http://www.wsj.com/articles/for-a-longer-life-get-social-1435157854

Sometimes, however, keeping up with friends can take a backseat to work or running around, so have lunch, meet for coffee, or in the one exception to the electronics, pick up the phone!

Move with moderation. Our lives are becoming ridiculously sedentary, but trying to make up for it in one weekend doesn’t work either. Take it from a writer who’s given herself tendonitis twice. Pace yourself with the yard work, the home repairs, the all day shopping excursions! http://www.postindependent.com/news/17081959-113/doctors-column-the-benefits-of-exercise-and

Make a plan. Write down one thing you mean to accomplish or want to do everyday. Write it in pencil because plans change and if you end up spending a day napping or catching up on your soaps, then add that to your list. Then you won’t feel like you didn’t get a break when you have to go back to work.

Enjoy your day off!
