the carpet before
Know that moment of horror when the weather starts to turn and you open the windows only to turn back and see all the dust you missed over winter? Okay, maybe it’s just me, but I like a clean house and I don’t function well without one.
So when I moved this past Christmas, I went from a house that had been fully tweaked to one that had been a rental. I bought it sight unseen, which is actually not as uncommon as you might think, and it passed inspection, but it needs all sorts of little fixes, particularly the carpet!

Now the carpet looked fine, but every time I vacuumed, it filled the canister with dust. A musty odor persisted and since carpet’s problematic with pets anyway, it had to go!
I had no clue how filthy that carpet was until it was pulled up. A fine layer of dust settled on every surface in the house – shelves, books, dishes, clothes – and steadily grew!
Oy! Bad mojo!
The contractors had to patch and level the cement subfloor before installing vinyl plank, including sweeping up cigarette butts apparently left by the original builders! Oy! Now I know where the smell came from!
So for 3 days, the contractors hustled, the cats wailed, and I buried my head in a book. Then I spent 4 days cleaning and muttering under my breath about lack of tarps. But the place looks wonderful and feels like open and airy! The cats might be minus one scratching pad, but everyone benefits from spring cleaning!
I know how you felt! I just went through a kitchen reno, 2 layers of tiles pulled up, dust everywhere! Drove me nuts. Your new floor looks amazing. Can’t believe the butts!
Thanks Judy! The butts were a shock, but I am enjoying it now.
